A new achievement for a Saudi female doctor restores hearing to two children

Medical centers and hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have recently achieved distinguished medical achievements and successes through many subtle and complex specializations.

Added to this list of successes is a new medical achievement of its kind accomplished by a medical team specialized in the Medical City of King Saud University, “King Abdullah Specialist Center for Ear”, led by Dr. Ikhlas Bint Suleiman Al-Tuwaijri, Consultant of Neurosurgery in children, by performing an operation that is considered one of the complex and accurate operations, which is implantation of an artificial auditory nerve, and the return of hearing to two children who have congenital anomalies in the auditory nerve.

Dr. Ikhlas bint Suleiman Al-Tuwaijri, head of the surgical team, explained about this process that after examining the two children it was found that one of them was born without an auditory nerve, and that the other child did not respond to the sounds, and this necessitated the formation of a specialized medical team from several departments, including the Department of Neurosurgery, and the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat, where the medical team decided that a hearing nerve could be implanted for both cases.

And about the difficulty of the process, Dr. Al-Tuwaijri indicated that the process of implanting the auditory nerve is a delicate and complex process due to the sensitivity of the region which is the brain stem, and she explained that the process went through several stages, and praise be to God for success, noting that a modern device was imported, which is an artificial hearing nerve to replace the nerve Acoustic, natural, and cultivated using a microscopic microscope.

It is noteworthy that the King Abdullah Specialist Center for Ear of the Medical City at King Saud University has become one of the natinal pride, since during its simple period since its establishment in 2012 AD, it has risen to the list of global programs in cochlear implantation, and has become a global reference for treatment, research and knowledge, where the King University Saud is the pioneering role in carrying the brigade of hearing disability treatment in the Kingdom, through its establishment of a fellowship for subtle specialization in ear surgeries and headphones transplantation, and it is the first and only fellowship in the Middle East in this specialty, with the aim of qualifying national cadres to reduce hearing disability, and provide the best health services in the kingdom.
